Unanimous nod for Catterick Garrison revamp
Levelling Up Fund support worth £19m is in place for the community space and town square-led project, in Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Richmond constituency.
North Yorkshire Council’s Richmond area planning committee discussed the proposals at its 11 January meeting. The LUF support, heavily criticised in some quarters, was secured in the January 2023 funding round.
Leading the professional team on the project are Planning Potential and building design consultancy Align Property Partners.
The project centres around the redevelopment of land off Shute Road in the centre of Catterick Garrison, close to the Princes Gatre shopping centre, Tesco and the leisure centre. In all, the site measures 17.8 acres.
Permission was sought for a community building including food preparation areas and flerxible space at ground floor and startup office space upstairs; linked to a multi-use events space, these elements come in at around 8,400 sq ft and 2,800 sq ft respectively.
There will also be a covered external canopy covering 4,800 sq ft – potentially housing markets – and a new public square and mini-plaza accounting for 18,500 sq ft.
Elements of the public space will include lighting columns and both hard and soft landscaping. Parking and play areas are also included. Also part of the mix are a link through to Richmond Road and improvements to the nearby parkland.
A handful of houses and the former Londis building will need to be demolished. The plans can be viewed on North Yorkshire Council’s planning portal at ZD23/00564/FULL.
