Sisk ramps up York Station Gateway work
A programme of weekday night-time road closures are planned as the contractor plots the removal of the remaining part of Queen Street Bridge.
City of York Council has provided an update on the programme of works to forewarn businesses and residents ahead of the closures, which are planned for early November.
John Sisk & Son is undertaking a £7.8m highways project as part of the wider £25.7m Station Gateway scheme.
As it maps out the reinvention of the arrival points to York station, Sisk has applied for a permit to carry out five consecutive weekday night closures of the new Queen Street diversion road. This will see the road closed from 7.30pm through to 6am on Monday 4 November, and the following four nights.
During the day the road will reopen to traffic.
The night works will see the removal of the remaining part of Queen Street Bridge, which was left in place while further work took place to protect the city walls.
Access to the station car park for those wanting to exit the car park will be maintained during the night time road closure. Residents and businesses on Queen Street will also be able to access their premises at all times. Lowther Terrace gates will be open as usual.
Cllr Kate Ravilious, executive member for transport at CoYC, said: “We are making significant progress in transforming the entrance to York Railway Station. These works will see the last bit of Queen Street Bridge removed, a major milestone for the project.
“However, we know how disruptive this work and closing such a key road is and want to forewarn people early so they can plan ahead, as we did last time.
“We were hugely grateful for everyone’s efforts to keep York moving and open for business during the last closures.
“We are sorry for any inconvenience caused but we will do all we can to keep disruption to a minimum, working with and supporting neighbouring residents and businesses. We will be sharing further information, including online maps, soon. We also have these public events to ask any questions or find out more.”
Sisk will also be undertaking night works around the front of the station portico in the coming weeks, removing existing lighting and structures.
During this period there will be temporary traffic lights in place. Work Schedule:
- 8pm-6am week commencing 7 October, five nights
- 8pm-6am week commencing 21 October, four nights
- 9pm-midnight 23 October, one night
The scheme is being delivered by CoYC, Network Rail, LNER and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority alongside Sisk.
The project remit is to completely transform the station frontage, providing an improved transport interchange, as well as revamping the public space around the station.
Within the wider project, plans put forward last year to enclose and modernise the front entry porte-cochere were refused at committee.
