Doncaster Waterfront plans unveiled
The £400m scheme will include 300 apartments, a hotel, a digital arena, film studio, and a multi-storey car park and feeds into the city’s ambition to become an AI centre of excellence.
The City of Doncaster Council has been working for more than a year on the plans, which centre around the idea of the waterfront becoming a ‘digital cluster’.
Proposals to transform the area into a key part of the city centre are part of the wider Donacster City Centre Strategy, a 25-year vision for the city centre that was recently approved.
The Waterfront remediation works are being funded by the government, and through funding from South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority.
Plans for the waterfront area follow the announcement of an April start date for the £32m city centre tech hub, all 52,000 sq ft of which will be built by contractor Willmott Dixon.
Mayor of Doncaster, Ros Jones, said: “The waterfront area represents a major development opportunity for the City of Doncaster.
“Doncaster Waterfront is one of the largest brownfield sites in the country with incredible potential for development.
“Remediation works are well underway and will set the groundwork for these future plans, and unlock the incredible opportunities of this area, near to our beloved Minster and Doncaster Markets.
“The plans tie in with our aspirations for Doncaster to become a hub for digital technology, to attract investment, jobs and growth for the whole of Doncaster.
“Our aim is to link up the Waterfront with the ‘beating heart’ of our city centre linking city centre living, business, retail, culture and leisure activity together to provide a much more connected city centre, further enhancing the vibrancy of this area.”
An inspiring vision for our city which should attract more businesses and hence employment

So ugly blocks of flats and a multi-storey car park will ‘enhance the vibrancy of the area’?
As well as a film studio and digital arena that no one has asked for, will they get any use?
The waterfront could be a social area for people – Lakeside was originally planned as ‘a beauty spot for the people of Doncaster with shops and cafes around it’. Now all we have are offices and houses around it, and now in what seems to be a money saving exercise, totally levelling bushes that have been around the side lake since day one.
The ‘beating heart’ has been ripped out by over-charging market traders so much so that there are barely any left. Compare and contrast to Barnsley’s thriving market.
Doncaster – destroyed by constant bad planning decisions.

So the land was purchased for a new Hospital but you are to build a waterfront full of apartments? I am sure Doncaster residents would have preferred the original plans for a new state of the art Hospital

Would be better building a new hospital

Why isn’t the hospital being built as planned. Doncaster city centre is not a place to go these days. The last time I went in didn’t feel safe so don’t go in now.

Another waste of money and something nobody asked for, the higher ups making these decisions for Doncaster have no clue what the people want. Doncaster should have never become a city and instead should have focused on pulling our history out of the dark that was also ruined by the same people. I love Doncaster but this is yet just another lame addition to a dying place.
