And finally… bringing home the bacon
York’s snickelways are set for a makeover, with 11 pieces of art themed around medieval life in the city – including one on the historically named Mucky Pig Lane, which was used as a thoroughfare for hundred of animals on market days.
The artwork would be installed as part of York BID’s efforts to revive the ancient passageways, and be themed around forgotten aspects of everyday life in the city from the last 1,000 years.
If approved, the pictures will be displayed throughout seven selected snickelways: Pope’s Head Alley, Peter Lane, Lunds Court, Nether Hornpot Lane, Coffee Yard, Le Kyrk Alley, and Finkle Street – previously known as Mucky Pig Lane.
Designed by Bright White, the artwork would have accompanying text explaining an aspect of the history of the narrow passageways.
The project, commissioned by York BID, is part of the Snickelways Rejuvenation Project, which has already seen better lighting installed in a bid to encourage more people to use them.
